Carlow University hired Oxford Development Company to provide Owner’s Representation services for the University Commons, Carlow’s new 82,500 SF student union building.
University Commons, the university’s former Grace Library, marks the first capital project on the Carlow’s campus in nearly two decades.
The building was completely gutted, keeping only the cement floors and steel beams, in order to transform the space into the new center of campus life. More than 75 percent of the existing building structure was retained in an effort to reduce the quantity of raw materials required to complete the project.
Upgrades include efficient heating and cooling systems, flooring, and a window curtain wall that is expected to reduce the building’s energy consumption by 19 percent.
The design of the University Commons integrated an array of services that support student and faculty learning and collaborations. Amenities include a cafe, Barnes and Noble bookstore, three computer labs, a state-of-the-art home for the Center of Digital Learning and Innovation, study spaces, and informal, shared workspaces for students.
The building is expected to attain LEED Silver certification. University Commons is Carlow University’s first LEED certification-eligible building.
